Chapter 8

A quick check for a pulse confirmed that William Viceroy was indeed dead, and it appeared that he had likely been dead for quite some time. After confirming the lack of a pulse, I sent both girls downstairs and called Colt. He told me not to touch anything until he arrived, so we locked the front door to prevent anyone from coming inside without having to walk past us, and then Georgia, Haven, Bailey, and I went out onto the back patio. When Jeremy returned from taking Annabelle to day camp, he went to check on Mylie, and then they both joined us as we waited for Colt and his team to arrive.

“Can you tell what happened?” Mylie asked.

“Not really,” I answered. “There isn’t any blood or anything. If I had to guess, I’d say the guy likely had a heart attack. The TV was on, although the sound was turned down low. The guy was fully dressed, although he’d taken his shoes off. He was lounging on the bed. It looked as if he poured himself a drink and then settled in to watch something on the TV after he returned to the inn last night. My guess is that he fell asleep and then died in his sleep. I didn’t notice any sign of a struggle, so I doubt foul play was involved.”

“Wow. That’s really sad,” Mylie said.

“Poor Rowen,” Jeremy added. “He invites his friend to attend his anniversary celebration, and then the friend dies.”

“I guess this is going to put a damper on things,” Haven said.

“Maybe it will put a damper on things for Rowen and Linda, but I don’t think Kyle and Liz are going to be all that upset,” Bailey said.

I frowned. “Why do you say that?”

Bailey responded. “I know I’m not supposed to listen to personal conversations, but Kyle and Liz were outside on the patio last night, and I heard them talking. It was warm last night, so we opened that really high window in the basement before we went to bed.”

“I heard them as well,” Haven said. “The talking, at least. I guess I didn’t pay all that much attention to what was being said.”

I looked at Bailey. “Did you hear what was being said?”

She looked unsure of answering.

“It’s okay if you just happened to overhear something,” I said.

Bailey spoke slowly, measuring her words. “I know you said that we needed to give our guests privacy, and I wasn’t trying to listen, but I had major heartburn last night, and I got up to get a drink of water. I was standing at the sink, and I heard voices. I realized that the voices were coming from the other side of the window, which, as you know, is high up on the wall if you’re in the basement but at ground level behind those bushes if you are outside.”

“And what did you hear?” Haven asked.

“They were talking about Liz’s father,” Bailey said.

“Liz’s father is Rowen,” I said.

“Not according to Kyle. Kyle
